Solar May Become Largest Global Power Source by 2050

Photovoltaic plants may provide as much as 16 percent of global electricity, and concentrating solar facilities could generate another 11 percent, the IEA said in an e-mailed statement today. The Paris-based organization details what is required to reach these figures in two scenarios it sets out to reach the goal.

GE, Toyo, Kuni Umi to Get 90 Billion Yen Loan for Solar Plant

GE Energy Financial Services, Toyo Engineering Corp., and Kuni Umi Asset Management Co. will build the 110 billion yen station in Okayama prefecture, the companies said in a statement today.

SolarCity, NextEra Top New York $94 Million Solar Grants

The state will help fund projects at 142 sites that will increase solar capacity by 68 percent, Governor Andrew Cuomo said today in an e-mailed statement. SolarCity and NextEra were among the 25 developers that received awards and plan to invest $375 million to add more than 214 megawatts of capacity.

Sunrun CEO Sees 100-Percent Growth Rate Continuing Through 2015

The San Francisco-based company, which relies on affiliated installers to reach about two-thirds of its customers, will expand or open offices in four states this year, Lynn Jurich said today in an interview at Bloomberg News headquarters in New York. Last year, 792 megawatts of photovoltaic panels were placed on U.S. rooftops, a 60 percent increase from 2012, according to data compiled by the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Abengoa Sells First Assets to Yieldco for $323 Million

Abengoa sold two solar power plants and a wind farm for $323 million to Abengoa Yield Plc, the Seville-based company said today in a statement. The solar facilities include 131 megawatts from projects in Spain and the 50-megawatt Cadonal wind farm in Uruguay.

Hong Kong Seeks to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions 50%

Businesses in the city, which consume about 40 percent of Hong Kong’s power, have been offered incentives to construct energy-efficient buildings or to reduce power use in existing structures, Wong Kam-sing said today in an interview in New York. Hong Kong also is promoting rooftop solar systems and turning food waste into energy.

Yingli Supplying 24 Megawatts of Modules for Honduras Solar Farm

Panel shipments for the utility-scale project will be completed in November, Baoding, China-based Yingli said today in a statement. Terms of the sale weren’t disclosed.
