Greenwood to Build 80-Megawatt Solar Power Facility in Chile

Construction on the Inti project in the Antofagasta region will begin this year and it may be online as early as 2016, Greenwood Energy, the Americas energy division of the Logothetis family’s Libra Group, said in a Jan. 9 statement. Power will be sold on the Chilean spot market.

Abengoa to Build World’s Largest Solar Desalination Plant

The $130 million facility at Al Khafji City in the desert kingdom’s northeast will desalinate 60,000 cubic meters of seawater each day, ensuring a stable supply of drinking water throughout the year, Abengoa said today in a statement. It will build the project in partnership with Advanced Water Technology, a new unit of state-owned technology company Taqnia.

Japan Could Cut Solar Tariffs as Much as 18% Following Cost Drop

Defective Panels Threatening Profit at China Solar Farms: Energy

The defects, found in products set to be used only in China, are in a coating that suppresses reflections on glass, allowing the panels to capture more light. About 23 percent of samples taken from dozens of Chinese companies failed to meet requirements, according to regulators in China. For samples from Jiangsu, the eastern province where much of the glass is made, the rate was as high as 40 percent.

SunEdison Raises $590 Million to Fund Acquisition of First Wind

SunEdison received a $400 million, two-year loan, secured with shares of its power-plant holding company TerraForm Power Inc., the Maryland Heights, Missouri-based company said Friday in a statement. Another $190 million came from the proceeds of a secondary offering of about 12.9 million SunEdison Semiconductor shares.

Mytrah Planning $150 Million Indian Wind-Farm Investment

The developer, listed on London’s Alternative Investment Market, is already talking with debt providers on the projects, Bob Smith, executive vice president of London-based Mytrah, said in an interview in the capital. It plans to add 1,500 megawatts of capacity by 2016 and will consider buying projects and raising money to enable it to build facilities faster.

Impax to Invest Last of $387 Million Fund in Irish, Finnish Wind

The recovery of the Irish economy and availability of project finance debt has made Ireland an attractive country for investment, Ian Simm, chief executive officer of Impax, said in an interview in London Jan. 13. It regards Finland as a key market for wind acquisitions, having already bought two projects in the country last year from Fortum Oyj.
