Antarctica Losing Mt. Everest’s Worth of Ice as Melt Triples (1)

A 21-year analysis by NASA and the University of California at Irvine found that glaciers in the Amundsen Sea Embayment, Antarctica’s fastest-melting region, lost an average of 83 gigatons of ice a year from 1992 to 2013, according to a statement today from the American Geophysical Union, which is publishing the findings in its journal. Earth’s highest peak weighs about 161 gigatons.

Abengoa’s 280-Megawatt California Solar Plant Begins Operation

Abengoa Yield Plc’s power plant, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, will sell electricity under a 25-year contract to Pacific Gas & Electric Co., according to a statement today. The solar farm is expected to displace 350,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year.

DCNS, which owns a majority stake in OpenHydro Group Ltd., and EDF will install seven turbines, each with 2 megawatts, that are expected to be connected to the grid in 2018, the companies said today in a joint statement. The project will produce enough electricity to power about 13,000 homes.
