Hong Kong Fuel Mix Consultation Document

Hong Kong is in the midst of its Public Consultation on Future Fuel Mix for Electricity Generation, which will determine how Hong Kong powers its $260bn economy and 7.3m residents. The Hong Kong Environment Bureau’s Future Fuel Mix consultation paper gives two fuel mix options, which increase gas and nuclear consumption while reducing coal burn. However, the future options not included in the public consultation document are as important, if not more, than Hong Kong’s thermal power options. The consultation paper is the beginning of a serious inquiry into Hong Kong’s electricity future, but it is only that. Bloomberg New Energy Finance has filed the following document with the Hong Kong Environment Bureau as part of the public consultation. It places the Future Fuel Mix discussion in context of Hong Kong’s economy, and analyzes implications for renewable energy, energy efficiency, vehicle electrification, and future fuel future prices.
