Joule Plans $150 Million Fund for Companies to Cut Energy Waste

The company is raising an initial 5 million pounds for its so-called SmartCity Enterprise Investment Scheme portfolio and will channel this into four or five businesses, Joule Assets Europe Chairman Jessica Stromback said in an interview in London. EIS funds are backed by the U.K. government and offer tax breaks to investors in “higher-risk” companies.

SolarCity to Expand in Commercial With $1 Billion Fund

The financing will help SolarCity build 300 megawatts of solar rooftops and carports for businesses, government agencies and schools over the next two years, the San Mateo, California-based company said Wednesday in an e-mailed statement. It has installed 1,800 commercial solar systems to date for clients including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Intel Corp.

Fuel Cell Maker Targets Sales in Dubai With Abramovich Backing

The companies will examine whether 300 megawatts of AFC’s fuel cells can be deployed at sites such as The World Development and at Al Maktoum airport, AFC said today in an e-mailed statement. If the sites prove suitable, the companies will form a joint venture to deliver the projects, it said.

American Water Partners With LG Sonic on Algae Bloom Work

LG Sonic’s buoys transmit ultrasonic waves that disrupt algae cells, preventing them from blooming. Four units were installed at Reservoir No. 1 at the Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant in Short Hills, New Jersey, operated by an American Water subsidiary. That’s the first such installation at a drinking-water reservoir in North America, the company said.

GE Backing Japan Solar Farm in $1 Billion Renewable-Power Push

The solar farm in Futtsu City, about 67 kilometers (42 miles) southeast of Tokyo, is also backed by the Japanese renewable-energy developer Green Power Investment Corp. and four banks led by Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ, according to a statement Tuesday from Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE that didn’t disclose the size of the investment.
