Poor Countries Tap Renewables at Twice the Pace of Rich

A study of 55 nations -- including China, Brazil, South Africa, Uruguay and Kenya -- found that they’ve installed a combined 142 gigawatts from 2008 to 2013. The 143 percent growth in renewables in those markets compares with an 84 percent rate in wealthier nations, which installed 213 megawatts, according to a report released today by Climatescope.

Southern Buying California Project From First Solar

The Solar Gen 2 project will be the largest Southern owns, capable of generating enough electricity for about 60,000 homes, the Atlanta-based company said today in a statement. First Solar, a panel maker, will buy back a minority stake in the project, which it acquired last year from a group including a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. affiliate.

Solar Power Inc., Guodian to Develop 1.5 Gigawatts in China

As part of the agreement, Solar Power will buy 160 megawatts of photovoltaic capacity from affiliates of Guodian Technology’s GD Solar unit for 1.575 billion yuan ($257 million), according to a statement today.

SunEdison Closes Financing on 26-Megawatt California Project

The Vega solar farm in Merced County is expected to begin generating power by the first quarter of next year, St. Peters, Missouri-based SunEdison said today in a statement. Terms of the financing underwritten by Deutsche Bank AG weren’t disclosed. The plant will generate enough electricity for more than 3,500 homes.

SunEdison Wins Order to Supply California Projects

Construction on the mix of rooftop, canopy and ground-mounted systems will begin by year-end and be complete by the end of 2015, St. Peters, Missouri-based SunEdison said today in a statement. Financial terms weren’t disclosed for the order, which involves working with nine agencies in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties.
