Microsoft’s 180 megawatt agreement with Vattenfall for a Netherlands wind farm is the largest corporate power purchase agreement ever signed in Europe (as of 6 November 2017) and is equivalent to the electricity demand at its data-center operations. The announcement comes shortly after Microsoft’s recent 37MW contract for a wind farm in Ireland, the first ever signed in the country. Microsoft follows a trend of U.S. companies that have met their renewable energy targets domestically and are looking to offset their utility electricity demand abroad, such as Google and Facebook. Microsoft’s recent announcements more than double 2017 corporate PPA volumes in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
