Southern Acquires 103-Megawatt Solar Farm From Community Energy

(Bloomberg) — Southern Co., owner of Georgia’s largest
utility, acquired a 103-megawatt solar farm in that state from
Community Energy Inc.

The Butler power plant will be on about 1,000 acres (405
hectares) in Taylor County and is expected to be operational in
the fourth quarter of next year, Atlanta-based Southern said in
a statement Thursday. Terms weren’t disclosed.

First Solar Inc., the largest U.S. panel maker, is
developing and will maintain the solar farm. The Butler project
will require more than 1 million of its thin-film modules.

Southern Power has bought or is building more than 1.1
gigawatts of renewable-energy capacity, including four solar
plants in Georgia, according to the statement.
