On 20 December, the European Court of Justice declared Uber Technologies Inc to be a transport company. Uber will now be subject to relevant local regulations, most notably the need for drivers to hold an appropriate license for carrying fare-paying customers. The ECJ’s decision is far from the first restriction placed on ride hailing service providers in Europe. Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria had already issued similar restrictions. Globally, the number of restrictions on ride hailing services is increasing. The regulatory onslaught is forcing providers to forge partnerships with incumbent taxi operators – as Uber did days ago with Thai taxi operator Howa.
